Plāvinī (floating breath) is among the rarest of the classical
Haṭha prāṇāyāmas. The practitioner swallows air (crow drinking — kāka
mudrā) to fill the stomach rather than the lungs, producing a
sensation of lightness and buoyancy. In Gheraṇḍa Saṃhitā it is said
that one who masters it can float on water for hours. For modern
practice, work with a long, buoyant inhalation into the belly and
chest, a sustained kumbhaka with udḍīyāna bandha, and a slow, silent
exhale. Treat it as a deep pratyāhāra technique. Practise on an
empty stomach only.
